IYBA 2013 Day 4

Day four of the International Young Brothers Assembly (IYBA) was the Apostolic Service Day. The delegates were assigned to five different groups, each one visiting a different Apostolate Center: Barangay Zone 1-A, De La Salle Health Science Institute (DLSHSI) Neurodevelopmental Center, Bahay Pag-asa Dasmarinas, Barangay Batas Dao, and Jaime Hilario Integrated School-La Salle (JHIS-LS).

Jaime Hilario Integrated School-La Salle

It was an early day for the Superior General, Br. Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria FSC. He was up at 4 a.m. He took part in the planned activities for the day, to visit a La Salle school located in Bataan, a three-hour drive, north of Manila – five from De La Salle University-Dasmarinas (DLSU-D).

JHIS-LS is the first Catholic school in Bagac, Bataan. In 2006, when the school started, there were only 43 students and 3 teachers. Today, it has grown to over 300 students and 16 faculty members.

The IYBA delegates assigned to JHIS-LS, together with Br. Alvaro and Br. Thomas Lavin FSC, arrived at 9 a.m. and were welcomed by Br. Mandy Dujunco FSC, principal of JHIS-LS, along with the entire student body at the school’s covered area. The students were well prepared, showcasing several song and dance presentations for the visitors as well as a welcoming gift – a six-decade rosary made by the local community. In his message to the students, Br. Alvaro emphasized that JHIS-LS and other Lasallian schools like it are the best kind of schools because they truly represent St. La Salle’s dream.

The delegates were then split into three groups and interacted with the different grade school classes. They told stories about themselves, their countries and their culture. Here, one can clearly see the Young Brothers as teachers. They inspired curiosity, awe and, oftentimes, laughter, from the students.

As this was going on, Br. Alvaro also had dialogue with a class, with Br. Mandy acting as a Filipino interpreter. The children, to Br. Alvaro’s surprise, introduced themselves in perfect Spanish. In their dialogue, one student asked, “If you weren’t a Brother, what would you be today?” It was a tough question. He answered that he had always wanted to be a Brother since he was 12 years old and he would be doing something similar – a teacher or a priest – had he not joined the Institute. Br. Alvaro spent the rest of the morning answering the questions of the students and sharing his stories. As a final message to the class, he said, “We are all leaders but we must know what it is to be a leader and that is to serve others.

After the interactions, the group had lunch at the Brother’s Community House. This was followed by a tour of the Bay of Bagac shoreline directly in front of the school. The Brothers then continued on, visiting the community of the students.

As a farewell treat, the entire student body gave a dance number for the Brothers. Afterwards, Br. David Caretti FSC, spoke on behalf of the Young Brothers, telling the students that waking up at 4 a.m. to visit their school was more than worth it. And, judging from the faces of the other Brothers at the end of the trip, he was right.

Bahay Pag-asa

Bahay Pag-asa Dasmarinas (House of Hope) is a transformation center for children in conflict with the law. Instead of confining them in detention centers, these children are cared for in a monastery-type home inside the DLSU-D campus.

As part of their Apostolic Service Day, a group of IYBA delegates visited the residents of Bahay Pag-asa this morning, taking part in their daily routine. Their day started with introductions as both the children and the Brothers were eager to find out about each other’s lives.

The rest of the day was filled with fun and enriching activities. The Young Brothers interacted with the residents through sports – playing table tennis and basketball. In arts and crafts the residents taught the delegates to make their very own rosary. In this occasion, the Brothers became the students. Despite the difference in age, culture and language, the Brothers and students were able to communicate with each other. In a value formation activity, the Brothers told the residents of Bahay Pag-asa to treasure this opportunity to change and rebuild their lives.

At the end of the day, as they said their farewells, the Brothers were clearly touched by the experience; even more so with the message of Kenneth Icaro, one of the residents who said, “Ang maitutulong lang po namin sa inyo sa pag-alis niyo dito ay konting panalangin. Maraming salamat po!” (The only thing we can give you when you leave is the assurance that we will include you in our humble prayers. Thank you very much!)

Barangay Zone 1-A

Barangay (Village) Zone 1-A is one of the many communities DLSU-D continuously works with. A total of 3,468 families currently reside within the community. Today, seven Brothers from the IYBA visited the community for their Apostolic Service Day.

A warm welcome greeted the Brothers as they arrived in the barangay hall of Zone 1-A. People from the barangay gave the delegates necklaces made by their community. The day’s activities began with a prayer  from the Brothers who then introduced themselves and shared their thoughts and expectations on the Philippines.

After their interaction, the Brothers were divided into three groups, visiting the riverside of the barangay and seeing first hand the difficulties the people there continually endure – flooding, malnutrition, and lack of jobs. The delegates were then given time to interact with the community. Some got to ride tricycles and jeepneys while others played basketball with the kids.

Then, the Brothers returned to the communities to do what they do best, teach. Each group held interactive lectures with the children of Zone 1-A, inspiring their young hearts and minds. And despite the language barrier, the Brothers were able to communicate with their new students. After, the Brothers returned to the barangay hall to reflect on their experiences for the day. Br. Hossam Nassim Yassa Basalious best described their experience when he said, “This day is a historic moment in our lives.”

The delegates of the IYBA who were assigned to the Center began their day with a briefing. In their interaction, the Brothers experienced the necessary patience and devotion required in teaching the students in the Center.  The morning session consisted of young students with special needs – five to seven years old. The activities included reading the calendar, listening to music, and exercising in the gym. After their lunch, the Brothers handled older students – ten to twelve years old.

The group was then split in twos, each pair visiting a patient being treated by DLSHSI senior medical students. Since most of these patients were under hospice care, the Brothers had to walk to their patients’ homes, getting a glimpse not only of their current condition but also its impact on their daily life. The delegates then had their lunch at Zone Catmon, the most socio-economically depressed area in the barangay.
